SUMMARY OF DEATH
On June 5, 2025, 4-month-old C.M. was found unresponsive in an Albuquerque, New Mexico home after co-sleeping on an adult bed between his parents, Gabriella Muniz (27) and Victor Gonzales (46). Despite life-saving efforts by deputies, the child was pronounced dead at 3:44 PM. Both parents admitted to regular use of methamphetamine and fentanyl, with Muniz reporting she had used approximately one gram of methamphetamine the day before and Gonzales admitting to daily fentanyl use. The mother reported seeing Gonzales' arm on top of the baby when she awoke. C.M. had been born drug-exposed to fentanyl and methamphetamine on January 28, 2025, and spent nearly a month in the hospital on a morphine drip to treat neonatal abstinence syndrome. He was placed on a CYFD 21-day safety plan with his grandmother as safety monitor, but the plan expired without further action, and CYFD had not had confirmed contact with the child since February 24, 2025. A search of the home revealed powdered fentanyl residue, a heroin-loaded syringe, large quantities of methamphetamine, and marijuana. Both parents were charged with abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in death.
